Pulisic Fires Back at Donovan and Dempsey: “Questioning My Commitment Is Inappropriate”

Christian Pulisic has addressed growing criticism over his absence from the USMNT's 2025 Gold Cup roster, explaining in an interview with CBS Sports that he chose to rest ahead of a demanding club season and the lead-up to the next World Cup.
Speaking on the Call It What You Want podcast, Pulisic responded to pointed comments from USMNT icons Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, who suggested his decision showed a lack of commitment. The current captain disagreed strongly. “Of all things, you can talk about my performances, but questioning my commitment to the national team is completely inappropriate,” he said.
The 26-year-old admitted the criticism stung, especially because he once idolized both players. “Some of them talk to me privately, showing support and trying to be friendly, then say something else publicly. It’s tough,” Pulisic revealed.
Despite the controversy, he emphasized his focus remains on helping the team long term. “People forget quickly. I’m sure that once I’m back, score a goal and contribute, it’ll all be forgotten,” he said.
Regarding his club situation, Pulisic noted that he had a single phone call with Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino to explain his absence from national duty. “He understood my intentions. That was the only conversation,” Pulisic said.
He also reiterated his full support for the current USMNT squad, saying the tournament presents a good opportunity for both emerging and established players.
Pulisic’s response aims to put an end to the noise, but the debate around leadership, commitment, and generational expectations within the USMNT is far from over.
