Paulinho was the decisive figure behind Palmeiras’ qualification to the Club World Cup quarterfinals. Despite physical limitations, the forward scored two crucial goals — one in extra time against Botafogo — effectively repaying much of the investment made in his transfer.

According to reports from Vitor Coelho Palhares via Lance!, Palmeiras paid $18 million (roughly R$115 million) to sign Paulinho from Atlético-MG last December, plus including the economic rights of youth prospects Gabriel Menino and Patrick.

Qualifying for the knockout stage earned the Brazilian side $13.125 million (around R$73 million), covering approximately 72% of the initial investment. His goal against Inter Miami also proved critical in avoiding elimination during the group phase. The FIFA tournament further offers a $1 million bonus per draw, contributing even more toward offsetting the transfer cost.

Despite his impact, Paulinho won’t be available beyond this competition. After the win over Botafogo, manager Abel Ferreira confirmed the striker will undergo another surgical procedure upon returning to Brazil, ruling him out for the rest of the season. “We knew we couldn’t count on him for more than 30 minutes,” the coach acknowledged.

Paulinho himself admitted lingering pain since the serious injury suffered while at Atlético: “I’m clearly not 100%. Starting against São Paulo came at a cost. It’s a rare, difficult injury, but I try to make the most of every minute I get.”
