Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou cautions his side on being complacent ahead of the Soweto derby against rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium
Abdeslam Ouaddou has cautioned Orlando Pirates to not win the game before playing it.
Ouaddou was cautioning his side ahead of today’s Soweto derby against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
This game holds a lot of consequences for Pirates as the Betway Premiership clash title challenge takes shape.
Pirates are on 38 points on second place behind Mamelodi Sundowns with same number of points, 38.
An inferior goal difference to that of Sundowns superiority puts them second.
“The worst is when you play the game before, it happens. If you play the game before, in front of 90 000 people, it cannot be good, you know. So, play on the day of the game. Enjoy the game because I think it's one of the biggest events in Africa,” Ouaddou said this week at the Nasarec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
“I understand that in this kind of game, of course, there are emotions. But the emotions should not kill the challenge, and the stage of the game.
“Of course, we are going to mentally prepare the players about how we want to achieve the game plan, how we want to play that game. But it's very important that mentally, the players feel secure to deliver the qualities and to show their qualities on the pitch,” Ouaddou observed.
Ouaddou compared South Africa’s premium fixture to that of other African states.
“If I take the games of Al-Ahly v Zamalek, Raja Casablanca in Morocco, as well, I think in DRC as well with Vita Club and TP Mazembe. So, it's one of the biggest. What I want to say to my players is enjoy the moment, give their best. Don't be too emotional because sometimes when you are too emotional, you miss something,” Ouaddou concluded.
The game starts at 3.30pm.
