Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest English football clubs, founded back in 1867. But now, it could disappear from the football map.

Details: According to The Athletic, the club’s management has been repeatedly delaying players’ wages, which has led to a transfer ban being imposed on the Owls. FIFA regulations allow players to unilaterally terminate their contracts under such circumstances. Maheta Molango, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, stated that the debts have become chronic.

Quote: “A standard contract provides for certain situations in which you can terminate the agreement. This is possible in the case of serious and/or systematic breaches. That’s exactly what we are considering now with Sheffield Wednesday.

Unfortunately, Sheffield Wednesday has been systematically delaying payments—this is, I believe, the third time in four months. We are in contact with the players. Our job is not to tell them what to do, but to provide them with the tools and say: ‘Here is what you can do if certain conditions are met.’”

For context: Meanwhile, the club itself is up for sale, it has no training ground due to an unfinished stadium, and currently, not a single friendly match has been scheduled. The Championship season, where the team finished 12th last campaign, kicks off on August 8.
