Miguel Herrera Urges Focus and Growth as Costa Rica Eyes Gold Cup Glory

Costa Rica head coach Miguel Herrera offered a frank assessment following his team’s slow start in their latest match, despite eventually recovering and showing strength at home. “We came out a bit sleepy, and that has to be eradicated,” Herrera stated.
He acknowledged the opponent’s superior speed and quality early on, but praised his side for adjusting well and creating clear scoring chances, many of which were denied by an outstanding opposing goalkeeper. “The important thing is that we maintain a winning mentality, especially at home,” he said.
Herrera highlighted standout performances by Jeyland Mitchell and Josimar Alcócer, and confirmed Alonso Martínez’s absence due to illness. He also expressed optimism about Warren Madrigal, who could join Valencia’s first team.
Looking ahead to the Gold Cup, Herrera was blunt: “We must top our group if we want to make the World Cup. It’s not about who we face, but how we respond.” He concluded with optimism, believing Costa Rica has the mix of youth and experience to win the tournament.
