Marciniak prepares for European final duty? UEFA sends a clear signal to Real and Barcelona
Polish referee Szymon Marciniak has faced a barrage of criticism following the Champions League semi-final between Inter and Barcelona. However, UEFA still places unwavering trust in one of its top officials—and seems ready to reward that loyalty.
Details: According to TVP Sport, Europe's football governing body is considering appointing Marciniak to the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United. Such a decision would serve both as recognition for the referee and a strong message to Real Madrid and Barcelona that the conduct shown by clubs and their fans toward match officials is unacceptable.
At the same time, Marciniak's involvement in the Champions League final is highly unlikely—not due to outside pressure, but because of UEFA regulations. The Polish referee already took charge of the showpiece in 2023, and so far, no official has been given the final twice. UEFA has no intention of breaking with that precedent.
Reminder: While Barcelona puts pressure on referees in European competitions, Real Madrid does the same in domestic tournaments, as highlighted by the saga ahead of El Clásico in the Copa del Rey final.
