Mane Rescues Senegal in AFCON Group D Stalemate
Sadio Mane scored as Senegal came from behind to draw 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, keeping the champions top of Group D at the Cup of Nations finals in Morocco. Cedric Bakambu had given DR Congo the lead in the 61st minute, but Mane replied minutes later to ensure Senegal stayed ahead on goal difference.
Both teams have four points, but Senegal sit first before their group match against Benin on Tuesday. Benin beat Botswana 1-0 earlier, leaving them bottom without a goal.
Senegal dominated chances, yet DR Congo struck through Bakambu after Theo Bongonda’s effort was parried by Edouard Mendy. Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye then burst down the right, his shot blocked, before Mane finished from close range. It was Mane’s 10th AFCON goal, his sixth tournament.
