Marcos Rojo’s days at Boca Juniors appear numbered, and Sergio “Kun” Agüero isn’t staying silent. As reported by ESPN, the former Argentina striker publicly defended his longtime national teammate and criticized Boca’s handling of the situation.

Rojo, once the team’s captain and a defensive leader, is set to leave the club after the Club World Cup, having fallen out of favor with head coach Miguel Ángel Russo. Boca’s board, led by Juan Román Riquelme, is already working on an “orderly exit” for the 35-year-old center-back. But the move has stirred controversy—and Agüero didn’t hold back.

“Before the Club World Cup, he was their best defender. He was doing fine. It was surprising he didn’t play,” Agüero said. The two shared years with Argentina’s national team, including the 2014 World Cup and two Copa América finals, forging a close bond.

Agüero also denounced the rumors claiming Rojo had clashed with Russo. “They make up nonsense, saying he argued with the coach, that he’s a bad teammate. That’s false, and it just stirs up trouble among the fans,” he said.

What upset him most, though, was the treatment Rojo has received. “He’s funny, always willing. It hurts to see someone who came from Europe being treated like this,” Agüero added.

Inside Boca, the final straw reportedly came after the loss to Bayern Munich. Rojo showed up for training but didn’t join the group, citing muscle soreness and heading straight to the gym. The staff viewed the move as a lack of commitment—especially with other injured players like Cavani and Herrera still training. His minimal warm-up during the Bayern match also raised eyebrows.

Despite returning to full training, Rojo is expected to sit on the bench against Auckland City—and likely, exit the club shortly after.
