Manchester City's ownership could face a challenge nobody at the Etihad can afford to ignore.

Details: According to talkSPORT, Manchester City could potentially face an ownership change if the Independent Football Regulator determines that the club's current owners no longer satisfy its suitability requirements. The source of the report is talkSPORT.

The Independent Football Regulator has statutory powers to assess existing owners and senior officials at regulated English clubs. If an owner is formally judged unsuitable, the regulator can issue directions requiring that person to leave the club and, in the most serious circumstances, use further powers to secure their removal.

That means a forced sale is legally possible, but it would not happen automatically because of another football disciplinary ruling. The regulator would have to carry out its own assessment and follow the required process before taking action against an incumbent owner.

There has been no announcement from the regulator that Manchester City's owners have been declared unsuitable. For now, the prospect of an ownership change remains a potential consequence rather than a decision that has already been made.

It is worth noting that Manchester City are majority owned by Newton Investment and Development LLC, which is wholly owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. US investment firm Silver Lake holds a significant minority stake of nearly 17% in City Football Group.
