Revenge of the rivals! Premier League clubs prepare to sue City for millions
Manchester City's legal nightmare is only beginning: several Premier League clubs are planning to sue the champions for compensation.
Details: According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, a number of clubs are exploring legal action after City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges. They believe they lost money because of City's breaches: missed Champions League qualification, lost Premier League prize money and lost sponsorship bonuses are all being cited. The clubs could even unite in a class action lawsuit against the Etihad side.
The logic is brutal in its simplicity. For years, clubs finished below a City side operating, as the commission has now ruled, outside the financial rules, and every place in the table carries a price: prize money, European revenue, commercial bonuses. If the courts agree that those losses were caused by City's rule breaking, the compensation bill could run into hundreds of millions of pounds. It comes on top of the sporting sanctions still to be decided by the commission and the appeal City intend to file. The battle is moving from the pitch to the courtroom, and almost the entire league is now on the other side.
