Gerard Martin rewrites UEFA Champions League semifinal history
Barcelona traveled for a crucial away clash against Inter in the UEFA Champions League second-leg, and in the second half, one of the Catalans' stars etched his name into the tournament's history books.
Details: Wing-back Gerard Martin delivered two assists in this encounter. According to Opta, he became the fourth-youngest player ever to provide a brace of assists in a single UEFA Champions League semifinal match. At the time of the game, Martin was 23 years and 69 days old. The last player to achieve such a feat was Dele Alli back in 2019.
Barcelona could have scored more, but during one incredible moment, Yann Sommer simply "stole" a goal from the Catalans with a phenomenal save.
Incidentally, one of the match’s most controversial moments occurred shortly before the halftime whistle. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak awarded a penalty against the Catalan club.
For the record: Inter took the lead thanks to a goal from Lautaro Martínez. That strike was the Argentine's ninth in this season’s UEFA Champions League, equalling the record of another Argentine.
