George Matlou talks about the Social Media effect on his game as Kaizer Chiefs begin defence of Nedbank Cup away to Stellenbosch FC tomorrow night
George Matlou has taken the public into his confidence regarding the dark side of Social Media for professional footballers.
The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder said cyber-bulling from the general public and fans is something which may kill footballer’s careers.
Matlou, a bit part player for Chefs, said the negativity surrounding what is said on social platforms can be unbearable.
His fight for a starting berth at the Naturena-based club is yet to yield fruit as he continues to be a fringe player despite spirited displays whenever given an opportunity.
Tomorrow Amakhosi face Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium for a Nedbank Cup last-32 match as they start defending the trophy they won last season.
“I’m going to talk about myself because there was a moment I wasn’t playing so you can just imagine you go on social media or anywhere,” said Matlou on Gagasi FM.
“So, you’ll see that now this one is not playing. Yes, I was attacked, things were said about me. So, you can just imagine what was happening in me.
“So, pressure is there, so you have to just maybe forget about what people say and you know what you’re good at. So, focus on football.
“People always talk whether you do good or bad. So, as a professional player, you should know that you play good this game, people will be happy.
“Next game you have a bad game; they will still speak. So, forget about what people say and focus on your job and help your team to get the results and stuff.”
