Finally! Jorge Jesus broke his silence on Ronaldo
Jorge Jesus has finally told his side of the story surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.
Details: Speaking ahead of Portugal's Nations League clash with Denmark, Jorge Jesus addressed the controversy that followed Cristiano Ronaldo's unused substitute appearance against Norway and revealed what was said when the pair sat down to discuss the situation.
Jesus insisted there had never been a genuine conflict between them:
“They [Portuguese media] basically forced me to speak with Cristiano about a situation where there was no situation at all. I told Cris: ‘There’s so much being said about this in Portugal that I don’t understand what’s going on.’ But there was nothing to discuss.”
The coach then revealed Ronaldo's response during their conversation:
“Cristiano told me: ‘I’m here for you to decide. If you want me to play, I’ll play. If you don’t want me to play, I won’t. If you want me in the stands, I’ll go to the stands.’”
According to Jesus, the matter was settled almost immediately and did not develop into a real confrontation between coach and captain.
“We had already sorted everything out after dinner. The problem wasn’t even a problem,” the Portugal boss explained.
It is worth noting that Ronaldo remains the all-time leading scorer and appearance-maker in men's international football. UEFA lists the Portuguese captain at 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country.
