In Tangier at the Stade Ibn Batouta, Senegal and Sudan are locking horns in the first Round of 16 clash of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Senegal came into the match as heavy favorites, but the opening minutes turned expectations upside down. By the sixth minute, Sudanese forward Aamir Abdallah had already stunned everyone with a sensational goal. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, the striker unleashed a sublime curling shot with his left foot straight into the top corner of Edouard Mendy's goal.
Significantly, this is Sudan's first goal in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage since 1970. For the record, 56 years ago, Sudan were crowned champions of the continent.
It’s worth noting that Sudan have not reached the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations since 2012, and have only featured in one final tournament since then.
