Fernandez opened the scoring with a superb free kick, marking his first goal for the Citizens since moving from Chelsea. The Argentine made brilliant use of the set-piece opportunity, sending the ball into the net with an elegant strike into the near corner and catching the goalkeeper off guard.
However, Manchester City were unable to hold on to their lead. Sunderland quickly fought back, with Brobbey scoring the equalizer to restore parity.
