Abdelhak Benchikha, the 61-year-old coach of JS Kabylie, stepped down last Friday after his team won 2-0 against ES Guelma in the 32nd final of the Algerian Cup. Even though his team made it to the next round, Benchikha decided to leave because of constant criticism from fans and problems within the club.
In an interview with Compétition, Benchikha explained that the situation in Guelma, where he was insulted and reportedly spat on, was the final straw. "I can handle criticism, but I won’t accept attacks on my honor and dignity," he said. Hearing fans chant "Benchikha out" during halftime only made his decision clearer.
Additionally, Benchikha believed that international coaches would not receive the same treatment. Hakim Medane and other members of the club's administration tried to convince him to stay, but Benchikha refused to change his mind. He said, "Even if I won the World Cup, it wouldn’t be enough for these people."
After weeks of rumored conflict with club president Hadi Ould Ali, Benchikha resigned. Ould Ali's threats to cut the contracts of a number of players, notably Gabriel Ouattara of Burkina Faso, a player Benchikha personally suggested, were said to be the cause of the conflict.
Under Benchikha's leadership, JS Kabylie achieved seven wins, three draws, and four losses in the league, temporarily topping the Algerian Ligue 1 table with 24 points. However, mounting criticism and internal conflicts ultimately overshadowed his accomplishments.
