The Argentina national team was reduced to ten men in the World Cup final against Spain. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a red card after a reckless foul on Pau Cubarsi.
In the dying minutes of regulation time, the Argentinian dangerously challenged the Spanish defender. Referee Slavko Vincic showed Fernandez a yellow card without hesitation, which turned out to be his second of the match, leaving the reigning world champions a man down at the most crucial moment.
This sending-off has become historic for Argentina. Now the Albiceleste are the only national team whose players have received three red cards in World Cup finals—more than any other nation in the tournament's history.
