Just days before Costa Rica’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Nicaragua on September 1, rumors about the future of head coach Miguel "El Piojo" Herrera shook the local football scene. Reports suggesting that the Mexican manager had received foreign offers — and that Argentina’s Diego Cocca could be lined up as his replacement — prompted swift action from the Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUTBOL), according to La Teja.
Initial reports from ESPN and Teletica Deportes claimed Herrera was weighing an exit following interest from abroad after his participation in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Some outlets even speculated that Cocca, recently parted ways with Talleres de Córdoba, might be under consideration for the role.
But FEDEFUTBOL quickly stepped in to dispel the noise. “That information is false, and the Federation doesn’t have to comment on baseless reports,” said the press department in a firm statement aimed at silencing the growing uncertainty among fans.
Herrera took charge of Costa Rica in January 2025, replacing Claudio Vivas with the mission of steering the squad through the final stretch of World Cup qualifying. His tenure so far has been marked by cautious optimism, though memories remain fresh of 2024, when then-coach Gustavo Alfaro abruptly left for Paraguay, destabilizing the team mid-cycle.
The current message from the federation is clear: Herrera remains focused on the task at hand. With qualification points on the line and regional rivalries intensifying, any distractions are unwelcome. As the September 1 match against Nicaragua approaches, all eyes are back where they should be — on the pitch.
For now, Herrera stays. And Costa Rica hopes this stability will translate into progress toward the 2026 World Cup in North America.
