Franco “Cepillo” González has embarked on a new chapter, traveling to Colombia to join La Equidad on a one-year loan, according to Montevideo Portal. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder and 2023 U-20 World Cup champion leaves Peñarol after logging just 29 minutes this year, choosing La Equidad over a competing offer from Chile’s Everton.
La Equidad, bottom of the Apertura tournament with only 10 points, was acquired in January by NX Football, a U.S.-based investment group that also owns Necaxa, DC United, and Swansea City. The club’s project is notably supported by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, owners of Welsh side Wrexham, renowned for its rapid rise through English football divisions.
González returned recently from a loan at Switzerland’s Yverdon Sport, cut short by injury. Since joining Peñarol after the youth World Cup, he appeared in 31 matches, scored five goals, and provided two assists. His departure coincides with Peñarol’s efforts to free up squad space, with Gastón Silva and Felipe Avenatti set for contract terminations and Camilo Mayada not renewing.
This transfer opens a new opportunity for Cepillo to establish himself amid a club backed by an unusual blend of international ambition and celebrity investment.
