The gap is no longer a gap, it is a canyon: the Premier League just spent more than Europe's other four major leagues put together.

Details: English top flight clubs smashed their all time record with a summer outlay of £3.49 billion, around €4.1 billion, comfortably eclipsing last year's £3.14 billion mark. The total is more than £700 million above the combined spending of Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga.

Manchester City led the arms race with a league record outlay of around £440 million, headlined by the £125 million deadline capture of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, a joint British record, and the £60 million signing of Iliman Ndiaye from Everton. Chelsea answered by making Morgan Rogers the most expensive British player in history, while Tottenham also splashed out heavily. The madness was not confined to the elite: 14 of the 20 clubs spent more than £100 million gross, 41 players moved for fees above £30 million, and more than half the league broke their own club transfer records. A single deadline day accounted for £506.5 million alone.

It's worth noting that Premier League clubs spent roughly £1 billion more on signings than they recouped in sales, a net splurge no other major league came close to matching.

Reminder: Price shock! Manchester United cool their Balde pursuit.
