CAF Champions League: Stadium Seats Damaged After Rangers’ Victory Over MC Alger
Rangers International’s 2-0 victory over MC Alger in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League was followed by reports of unrest at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
According to local media reports, some members of the Algerian club’s travelling contingent allegedly vandalised stadium seats and forced open an exit gate after the final whistle.
The situation reportedly escalated around the stadium tunnel, where MC Alger’s head coach was said to have faced hostility from sections of his own supporters before being escorted away from the venue.
The match had already been tense, with Rangers reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute. The Nigerian side, however, remained composed and continued to compete against their Algerian opponents.
MC Alger also had a player sent off in the 52nd minute. The dismissal reportedly caused a delay after the player initially refused to leave the pitch, while an official from the Algerian club was dismissed in the 70th minute.
Rangers eventually broke the deadlock with an 83rd-minute penalty before James Emo scored four minutes later to seal a crucial 2-0 win.
The result gives the Flying Antelopes a valuable advantage ahead of the return leg in Algeria as they seek to advance in the continental competition. However, the reported post-match disturbances have cast a shadow over their victory.
