CAF Champions League: ASEC Mimosas snatch unexpected draw in Morocco
The Ivorian club narrowly avoided defeat during their away trip to the Stade d’Honneur in Meknes, against MAS Fez, on Sunday 18 October, in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the CAF Champions League.
The match had, however, started well for the Moroccans. MAS Fez took the lead in the 31st minute through Chabani Aymene. After opening the scoring, the home side managed to hold onto their lead throughout the second half.
Just as MAS Fez seemed to be heading for victory, ASEC Mimosas found the resources to fight back in the dying moments. In the 90th+3 minute, Bamba Souhalio popped up to level the score and dampen the Moroccan crowd’s spirits.
This late goal means the Yellow and Blacks leave Meknes with a valuable result. The Ivorians remain in a strong position ahead of the return leg.
ASEC Mimosas and MAS Fez will meet again next Sunday at the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. In front of their home crowd, the Mimos will be looking to make the difference and secure their place in the group stage.
