Bukele Confirms Potential Shift for El Salvador: More Foreign-Based Players Could Join La Selecta

With El Salvador set to kick off their Gold Cup campaign against Curaçao, a key off-field development may overshadow the opening whistle. Yamil Bukele, president of the Salvadoran Institute of Sports (INDES), confirmed that discussions are underway to include more foreign-based players in the national team pool—potentially changing the trajectory of Hernán Darío Gómez’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Responding to a question on social media, Bukele replied: “Yes, we’re working on it,” referring to the possibility of bringing back players like Amando Moreno, Mayer Gil, Joshua Pérez, and Gabriel Acevedo—provided that coach “Bolillo” Gómez gives his approval.
Currently, the squad is dominated by domestic players, with only three based abroad: Brayan Gil (Russia), Harold Osorio (USA), and Enrico Dueñas (Netherlands). This has triggered criticism from fans, particularly toward national team director Ernesto Góchez. Bukele defended Góchez, stating he manages logistics and does not influence selection decisions.
Meanwhile, Gómez is focused on the group stage of the Gold Cup and refining his tactical approach for the upcoming final round of World Cup qualifiers. El Salvador recently secured a key draw against Suriname to advance.
Other potential reinforcements include Nathan Ordaz (currently with LAFC at the Club World Cup) and estranged figures like Alex Roldán and Eriq Zavaleta. Their return remains uncertain, tied to unresolved disputes with the federation.
Bukele’s statement could mark a turning point, raising hopes that a stronger, more diverse squad will emerge in time for the final push toward 2026.
