According to Spanish media, the disturbance began in the 13th minute, just as Athletic Club were preparing to take a corner. Hundreds of paper airplanes and colorful plastic balls were thrown onto the playing surface, forcing the referee to halt the action.
The match was initially stopped for approximately ten minutes before briefly resuming. However, supporters continued throwing objects onto the pitch, prompting the referee to send both teams to the dressing rooms.
The stadium announcer warned that further incidents could result in the match being abandoned completely.
The extraordinary scenes unfolded amid a coordinated protest by Rayo Vallecano supporters against club president Raúl Martín Presa. Fans had prepared their demonstration before kick-off, expressing dissatisfaction with the club's management and the situation surrounding their home stadium.
It is worth noting that this was Rayo Vallecano's first match at the Vallecas stadium in 147 days. The team had previously been unable to play there because of problems with the venue's condition.
