Spain, Elche, Estadio Martinez Valero

Elche and Celta Vigo meet at the Martínez Valero on Sunday, October 11, in the eighth round of LaLiga. The hosts enter the match in 18th place with five points, while Celta sit 14th with seven. The gap in the table is small, but the teams have reached those totals in very different ways: Elche have already conceded 17 goals, whereas Claudio Giráldez’s side have allowed only six.

Elche: the first victory brought relief, but home results remain a concern

Martín Anselmi’s first months in charge have produced an Elche side that is prepared to play brave football. The Argentine replaced Eder Sarabia in the summer and has made it clear that he wants his team to be proactive, intense and comfortable with the ball. That approach has created plenty of entertaining matches, but it has also left Elche vulnerable when possession is lost.

Their seven league games have produced 28 goals in total. Elche have scored 11 themselves, finding the net against Deportivo, Racing Santander, Real Sociedad, Athletic Club, Real Madrid and Espanyol. The defensive numbers are far less encouraging: 17 goals conceded is one of the reasons the team remains inside the relegation zone.

There was, however, a major psychological boost in the previous round. Elche earned their first league victory of the season by beating Espanyol 3-1 away despite playing almost the entire match with ten men. Fer Niño scored twice in the first half and Germán Valera added the third after the break. It was easily one of Elche’s most impressive performances of the campaign.

The problem is that the Martínez Valero has not yet become an advantage. Elche have lost all three league matches there: 0-5 against Barcelona, 2-3 against Real Sociedad and 2-3 against Real Madrid. Anselmi’s team have shown that they can create chances against strong opponents, but they have repeatedly paid for defensive mistakes and risky build-up play.

There is also an important personnel issue in midfield. Federico Redondo was sent off against Espanyol and has received a one-match suspension, meaning he will miss the meeting with Celta. The Argentine had started five league matches and his absence forces Anselmi to make another adjustment in the central area.

Celta: only six goals conceded and an unbeaten away record

Celta have had the opposite problem. Giráldez’s team have generally been difficult to break down, but their attacking production was modest until the previous league round. Their first seven matches brought eight goals scored and only six conceded, giving the Galicians one of the more solid defensive records in the division.

The breakthrough finally arrived against Racing Santander. Celta won 5-0 at Balaídos, with Hugo González and Ilaix Moriba scoring before Pablo Durán added a brace and Miguel Román completed the rout. It was Celta’s first league victory of the season after a run dominated by draws and narrow defeats.

The away numbers are particularly relevant before the trip to Elche. Celta have not lost any of their three league games on the road: they drew 0-0 at Valencia, 0-0 at Real Sociedad and 1-1 at Getafe. Giráldez’s side have therefore conceded only once in three away fixtures.

Celta do have significant absences to manage. The club’s medical report, updated on October 2, lists Miguel Román following knee surgery, Sebastián Cáceres with pubalgia, Jones El-Abdellaoui after knee surgery and Iago Aspas, who continues individual work after suffering a thigh muscle tear. Aspas was initially given an estimated recovery period of around four weeks from mid-September.

Even without their veteran captain, Celta’s 5-0 win showed that Giráldez has alternatives. Pablo Durán, Hugo González, Ilaix Moriba, Ferran Jutglà and Borja Iglesias give him different options in the final third, while the overall structure of the team has remained much more stable than Elche’s.

Key trends

  • Elche have conceded 17 goals in seven league matches.
  • Elche have lost all three of their home league games this season.
  • Celta have conceded only six goals in seven rounds.
  • Celta are unbeaten in three away league matches.
  • Celta have conceded just once away from home.
  • Elche have scored in six of their seven league matches.
  • Both teams recorded their first league victory of the season in the previous round.

Celta’s defensive edge can be decisive in Alicante

Elche deserve respect after what they achieved against Espanyol. Winning 3-1 with ten men demonstrated character, and Fer Niño is becoming increasingly important in attack. At home, Anselmi is unlikely to abandon his aggressive approach, so Celta should expect periods in which the hosts control possession and push numbers forward.

Still, the season-long numbers point toward the visitors having the more reliable structure. Celta have conceded almost three times fewer goals than Elche and have yet to lose away from Balaídos. Their three away fixtures have produced two goalless draws and a 1-1 draw, which underlines how comfortable Giráldez’s team can be when they are not required to dominate the game.

Elche’s defensive vulnerability and Redondo’s suspension make backing the hosts difficult, while Celta’s own lack of away victories makes a straight away win unnecessarily risky. The draw-no-bet option protects against another low-scoring stalemate while still taking advantage of Celta’s superior defensive stability.
