Bolivia Bets on Youth Ahead of Key World Cup Qualifier Against Venezuela

Bolivia is preparing for what could be a turning point in its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. As reported by PrensaFútbol, head coach Óscar Villegas emphasized the importance of Friday’s match against Venezuela, a direct rival in the race for a playoff spot.
Currently seventh in the CONMEBOL standings, Bolivia remains within striking distance thanks to a roster that blends promising youth with seasoned leadership. “We haven’t abandoned the project. We continue to rely on young talent and positive, experienced leaders,” said Villegas. He pointed to the recent success of Bolivia’s U-17 team, which qualified for its World Cup, as proof that the strategy is working.
Villegas knows that earning points in Maturín is not just about standings—it’s about building momentum. “We want to play our best game and come away with something. This group has a well-structured game plan,” he noted.
Team unity, according to the coach, has been crucial in implementing his footballing philosophy. “This is a beautiful group. They’re going to deliver good football,” he said, underscoring the atmosphere he’s cultivated within the squad.
Bolivia will face Venezuela on June 6 at 6:00 p.m. local time, followed by a home match against Chile in La Paz. It’s a pivotal stretch for a nation that hasn’t been to a World Cup since 1994—but one that now seems to believe that with the right mix of youth, structure, and belief, the dream remains alive.
