It’s been a tough Grand Slam season for “neutral” tennis player Daniil Medvedev. After bowing out in the opening round at Roland Garros, history repeated itself at Wimbledon.
Details: Medvedev, playing under a neutral flag, delivered an early shock by losing to France’s Benjamin Bonzi, the world No. 64, in the very first round. The lower-ranked Bonzi proved more composed in the tiebreaks, taking both the first and third sets.
Medvedev only managed to claim the second set, 6-3, but in the fourth, Bonzi emphatically sealed the match, dominating the “neutral” player 6-2. To be fair, the sweltering heat and low humidity took a toll on Medvedev, who even vomited during Bonzi’s serve.
Bonzi’s next opponent will be decided in the match between Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic and Australia’s Jordan Thompson. At the time of publication, that contest was still underway.
Reminder: In the first round of Roland Garros, Medvedev lost to Britain’s Cameron Norrie, 2-3.
