Alex Morgan Joins San Diego Wave Ownership in Post-Retirement Move

U.S. soccer icon Alex Morgan has officially joined San Diego Wave FC as a minority investor, deepening her legacy with the club she helped launch as a player just three years ago. As reported by Inside World Football, Morgan becomes part of the new ownership group led by the Leichtman-Levine Family Foundation, which acquired the franchise in 2024 for a record-setting $113 million.
Morgan retired as Wave FC’s all-time leader in goals (28) and assists (11). In the club’s debut season, she won the NWSL Golden Boot with 16 goals and led the expansion team to a historic playoff berth. In 2023, she lifted the NWSL Shield before a packed home crowd, capping off a stellar on-field career.
“San Diego is where I’ve built my home, where I’m raising my children, and where I found purpose beyond playing,” Morgan said. “I believed in this club before our first game, and I still believe in what it can mean for women’s sports. I’m proud to invest in that future.”
Wave’s principal owner, Lauren Leichtman, praised the move: “Alex has always led beyond the field. Her decision to invest reflects her faith in what we’re building and strengthens our vision.”
Morgan’s involvement adds to the momentum behind a Wave FC project aiming to become a global standard-bearer in women’s football, with expanded community work, player development, and infrastructure plans already underway.
