Al Ahly’s FIFA Tournament Misfortunes Continue with Pachuca Defeat
Al Ahly continued to face difficulties in FIFA-approved tournaments when they lost a dramatic penalty shootout to Pachuca in the semifinals of the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The game, held at Stadium 974 in Doha, finished 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. Pachuca won 6-5 in the penalty shootout and will now face Real Madrid in the final.
Al Ahly missed three penalty kicks, allowing their North American rivals to win, despite Pachuca missing their first two. Al Ahly's failure to get past the FIFA competition semifinals is exemplified by this loss. They have already made it to this point seven times, but they have never prevailed.
The Egyptian club has previously faced semifinal defeats against European and South American teams, including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Brazilian sides such as Internacional and Palmeiras. This was their first semifinal against a team from North America, but the outcome remained the same.
In these seven games, Al Ahly has only scored two goals and let in 13. The only players who scored for them were Angolan forward Amado Flavio and Tunisian defender Ali Maaloul.
Pachuca is moving on to face Real Madrid in the Intercontinental Cup final at Lusail Stadium on December 18. Meanwhile, Al Ahly can be proud of their regional championship win.
