AFCON 2025: Did the Ball Cross the Line? VAR Denies Calvin Bassey as Nigeria Are Held by Algeria

Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey thought he had given the Super Eagles the lead in their AFCON 2025 quarterfinal clash against Algeria, but a dramatic goal-line incident stole the spotlight.

The Super Eagles thought they had broken the deadlock when Calvin Bassey met a free kick at the back post and volleyed the ball toward goal. It bounced dangerously close to the line before Algeria defender Ramy Bensebaini made a desperate clearance.

Following a VAR check, officials ruled that the ball had not fully crossed the line, and play resumed.
