Will Barcelona get their way? Nico Williams talks about changing clubs next summer
Nico Williams was one of Barcelona’s primary transfer targets this offseason. There was considerable speculation about the young talent’s potential move to the Catalan side, but the outcome was disappointing for the Spanish runners-up. Williams made the decision to remain at Athletic Club.
He has always professed a deep affection for the Basque club, a sentiment he reaffirmed during an interview with DAZN following yesterday's 0-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid. However, he did not entirely rule out a future transfer, hinting that it might happen as early as next year.
"It’s been made clear that I’m happy here; these matters are handled by my agent. I’ve already decided to stay here for another year to continue growing with Athletic, that’s the most important thing right now. I was offered other opportunities that another player might have taken, but I chose to stay for another year."
Williams' mention of "another year" might be just a figure of speech, but it could also signal his intention to leave the club at the end of the season. Should the Spaniard continue to perform at a high level, Barcelona will likely renew their efforts to lure him to their side. This transfer could become one of the most talked-about moves in Spain, or even Europe, in the next offseason.
