Athletic Bilbao may challenge the result against Barcelona. What's the issue?
Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in the second round of La Liga. This match took place on Saturday, August 24. By Tuesday, August 27, the Basque side was ready to challenge the result.
According to Onda Cero, Athletic has approached La Liga, seeking clarification regarding the registration of Iñigo Martínez in place of Ronald Araújo. Bilbao considered contesting the match, alleging that the registration of the central defender might have been unlawful.
Currently, Araújo is injured, and a similar situation arose with Dani Olmo, whose registration was completed because Christensen is also injured. For a player to be registered in place of an injured player who is sidelined for at least five months, a contract specifically for the replacement of the injured player must be signed. It is not enough to simply have the player on the team; they must be signed for this specific purpose.
In Araújo's case, Bilbao requested clarification on reports that something similar had occurred with Christensen. The match was played last Saturday, and the deadline for filing appeals expired on Tuesday at 14:00.
It is worth noting that the Catalans officially registered the player for participation in matches. The relevant changes were made on La Liga's website, which confirmed that Olmo is now eligible to play for Barcelona in the championship.
