“We should have played 11 against 9” Mourinho tears into referee after derby defeat to Atlético

Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho launched a furious attack on the referee after the defeat to Atlético in the Madrid derby. The Portuguese coach arrived at the press conference with more than just words — he brought printed photos of controversial incidents and showed them to the journalists.

Mourinho claimed that Atlético players should have been shown straight red cards on at least two occasions. In the coach’s view, those incidents had a major impact on the course of the match.

“We could save the time we spend here at the press conference. The story of the match is right here, on this sheet of paper. These are two red cards that the referee failed to show. We should have played 11 against 9!” Mourinho declared.

The Portuguese coach also criticized the appointment of the referee for the Madrid derby. According to Mourinho, the official lacks the experience required for matches of this level and has no international experience.

“This referee does not have the experience to officiate a Madrid derby. He has not even refereed international matches. Do you know why? Because he is not good,” the Portuguese coach said.

At the same time, the coach praised his players for their commitment and said that after returning to Spain, he had expected to see a different La Liga, but was left disappointed.
