Real Madrid have reached a new statistical low in La Liga, recording their worst attacking performance in terms of expected goals in more than a decade.
Details: According to Opta, Real Madrid registered just 0.32 expected goals (xG) in their La Liga clash against Atlético Madrid on September 20. This is the club's lowest figure in a Spanish league match since February 2015, when Los Blancos recorded an even more disappointing 0.2 xG. Remarkably, that previous low also came against Atlético Madrid, making the latest derby another painful entry in the club's statistical history.
The Madrid derby ended in a 2-1 defeat for José Mourinho's side. Real Madrid struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the encounter, with Atlético restricting their city rivals to very few dangerous attempts on goal.
The situation became even more difficult for the visitors after Dean Huijsen was sent off early in the second half. Alejandro Grimaldo converted the resulting penalty in the 53rd minute, before Jonathan David doubled Atlético's advantage just six minutes later. Antonio Rüdiger pulled one back for Real Madrid in the 89th minute, but the visitors were unable to avoid defeat.
It is worth noting that Atlético Madrid finished the derby with 2.38 xG, compared to Real Madrid's 0.32. Kylian Mbappé managed just one shot during the encounter, highlighting how effectively the hosts restricted the French striker's opportunities.
