Walid Regragui Faces High Expectations as AFCON 2025 Approaches
Walid Regragui, the head coach of Morocco’s national team, was among the first to arrive at the Mohammed V Theater in Casablanca to attend the draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Regragui recently completed an international tour to monitor and communicate with Moroccan players in Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Turkey, and Italy.
The crowd enthusiastically greeted Regragui, accompanied by Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa, with chants of "The people want the AFCON!" indicating the strong desire for Morocco to win the championship at home.
Regragui admitted that he was under tremendous pressure to win Morocco's second AFCON championship, particularly given their early elimination in the previous tournament in Côte d'Ivoire. With the tournament set to take place in Morocco, the stakes are higher than ever.
“Of course, there is pressure, and that’s normal,” Regragui said before the draw. “Just two years ago, we were the talk of the world at the Qatar World Cup. That wasn’t just a Moroccan achievement; it was a moment of pride for the entire African continent.”
Regragui emphasized that the World Cup’s success continues to influence the team’s ambitions. “As hosts, we are expected to maintain that level in the African championship. Even though there is a lot of pressure, I don't mind. The Moroccan people are excitedly awaiting our return with the trophy.
In his remarks at the draw, Fouzi Lekjaa reaffirmed similar ideas and emphasized Morocco's commitment to the tournament's success. “We are committed to providing the best conditions for all participants. The world is watching, and together, we aim to elevate the sport and ensure fair competition on the field.”
Lekjaa also promised the usual Moroccan hospitality. “As always, Morocco will welcome everyone warmly. We hope this edition will be a resounding success.”
Morocco, which won its only AFCON title in 1976, will aim to break the decades-long drought and meet the high expectations of its fans.
