WAFCON 2026: Cameroon get off to a winning start

The Indomitable Lionesses secured victory in their opening Group D match.

Cameroon’s women’s national team made their debut at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. Facing the Malian women’s team, Valentine Nguele’s side secured a thrilling victory.

The match had, however, started well for the Cameroonians. Marie Gisèle Ngah Manga opened the scoring for the Lionesses in the 14th minute, making it 1–0. But the Malian response was not long in coming. The Malian side were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Aissata in the 30th minute, levelling the score at 1–1.

In the second half, the tension continued. But the match turned in the 73rd minute when Cameroon were awarded a penalty.

Marie Gisèle Ngah Manga converted it perfectly to restore the Indomitable Lionesses’ lead, 2–1. The score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
