Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed that he apologized to his teammates after missing a crucial last-minute opportunity during Nigeria’s emphatic 4–1 victory over Gabon in the FIFA World Cup playoff qualifier on Thursday.

The Galatasaray forward squandered a great chance to win the match at the end of regular time, firing wide with only goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba to beat. In his post-match comments, Osimhen expressed regret for the miss but highlighted the importance of his teammates’ support throughout the game.

“When I missed that kind of opportunity, I asked my teammates if we were going directly to penalties or if there would be extra time,” Osimhen said. “They told me there would be extra time, and I told them I’m so sorry and I would correct it.”

Osimhen stressed that having supportive teammates can make all the difference, especially in high-pressure moments.

“It’s important to have teammates who motivate you,” he added. “When you’re down, they do everything to lift you up.”

Despite the earlier miss, Osimhen redeemed himself in extra time, scoring two goals to help the Super Eagles secure their place in the CAF World Cup qualifying final. The Super Eagles will now face DR Congo on November 16, 2025, in Morocco, as Osimhen and his teammates aim to book their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
