Andrea Pirlo’s Russian contract has unexpectedly escalated into a nationwide controversy.

Details: According to Sky Sport, Pirlo’s role as a global ambassador for a Russian betting company is sparking heated debate and complicating his potential appointment as the head coach of the Italian national team.

The company in question is Fonbet, with whom the Italian legend continues to collaborate. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that, due to Italy’s strict gambling advertising regulations, Pirlo will have to terminate his agreement with the bookmaker before signing any contract with the Italian Football Federation.

The situation has already spilled beyond the football pitch. Several Italian politicians have publicly criticized Pirlo’s candidacy, insisting that the future national team boss must sever ties with the Russian company and fully embrace the responsibilities of his new public role.

Official confirmation of the appointment is still pending. Previous reports indicated that the Italian Football Federation had reached an agreement with Pirlo following Pep Guardiola’s refusal, but the federation itself has yet to comment on the matter.

It’s worth remembering that Pirlo won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, and as Juventus manager, he lifted both the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.

Reminder: Instead of Pep. Italy to appoint former legendary Italian footballer as head coach.
