Unexpected absence! Zidane reportedly skips historic Ballon d'Or ceremony in London
The 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony is set to take place without one of football's most recognisable legends. Zinedine Zidane will reportedly miss the prestigious event in London, despite the occasion bringing together some of the biggest names in the sport.
Details: According to a report attributed to RMC Sport and shared by TheGoalsZone on October 26, Zidane will not attend the Ballon d'Or ceremony. French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo is instead expected to represent the national team at the gala. The report does not explain the former Real Madrid manager's absence, and no official reason has been announced. His decision comes as football prepares to celebrate the award's historic 70th edition.
Zidane's reported absence is notable because of his enormous connection with the award. The French icon won the Ballon d'Or in 1998 after leading France to World Cup glory. He later established himself as one of the most successful managers of his generation, winning three consecutive Champions League trophies with Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018. His presence would have added another celebrated figure to an already impressive gathering.
Several other French stars are expected to make the trip. According to RMC Sport, Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé have accepted invitations to attend the ceremony. Mbappé is among the leading contenders following another outstanding individual campaign, while Dembélé arrives as the reigning winner. Their attendance ensures that French football will remain prominently represented despite Zidane's reported absence.
It's worth noting that the ceremony takes place at London's Palladium Theatre on October 26, marking 70 years since Stanley Matthews became the first Ballon d'Or winner in 1956. Zidane received the trophy in 1998 and remains one of France's most celebrated football figures. The winner of the 2026 men's award will be revealed during the evening.
Reminder: Chaos in Paris! PSG fans want their own club to forfeit a match.
