To avoid having his scoring record broken. Eto’o allegedly removed Vincent Aboubakar from Cameroon’s squad on purpose
The Cameroon national team are preparing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in just a few days. However, internal tensions may be brewing.
Details: According to The Sun, Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian football federation, is suspected of deliberately excluding striker Vincent Aboubakar from the squad. The former Cameroon forward reportedly does not want his national-team scoring record to be surpassed and is believed to have influenced the decision to leave Aboubakar out.
Aboubakar currently has 45 goals in 117 matches for Cameroon, while Eto’o scored 56 goals in 118 appearances.
Cameroon will compete in Group F of the Africa Cup of Nations alongside Gabon, Ivory Coast and Mozambique. Their first match is scheduled for Wednesday, December 24.
Reminder: Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana was included in the preliminary squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations just seven days after the coach who initially selected him was dismissed from his role.
