Third-choice goalkeeper debuts in Merseyside derby as Liverpool's Mamardashvili stretchered off
The Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton was overshadowed by a serious incident involving the Reds' goalkeeper.
Giorgi Mamardashvili sustained an injury during the match and was unable to continue. The player was stretchered off the pitch, causing significant concern among the team.
Head coach Arne Slot was forced into an emergency substitution, sending on the reserve goalkeeper. Third-choice keeper Freddie Woodman took to the field, trusted to guard the net for the remaining half-hour of the match.
There is no official update yet on the severity of Mamardashvili’s injury or his expected recovery timeframe. Notably, Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker is also sidelined with an injury.
It’s worth noting that 29-year-old Woodman made his Liverpool debut in the Premier League. Previously, he played four top-flight matches for Newcastle in 2021 before spending three years with Preston.
