Last month, an incredible fight for the undisputed heavyweight world championship took place. Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk defeated Briton Tyson Fury by split decision, adding the WBC belt to his collection.

Less than a month later, the World Boxing Council (WBC) updated its rankings of the best heavyweight boxers. The top spot, of course, went to Oleksandr Usyk. He is the first boxer since Lennox Lewis to simultaneously hold all heavyweight championship belts.

Following his defeat to Usyk, Tyson Fury lost his leadership position and dropped to third place, ceding the top contender spot to his compatriot, Anthony Joshua. AJ has impressive consecutive victories over Francis Ngannou and Otto Wallin and is well-positioned to fight for the vacant IBF title against Daniel Dubois in September.

The Gypsy King is the second mandatory challenger for a bout against Usyk for the WBC world title. German Agit Kabayel rounds out the top three contenders for the championship belt.

Next is Zhilei Zhang from China, who earned his spot after a crushing victory over Deontay Wilder. The top five contenders are completed by Nigerian Efe Ajagba, who holds the WBC Silver title.

The updated WBC heavyweight rankings are as follows:

  1. Oleksandr Usyk
  2. Anthony Joshua
  3. Tyson Fury
  4. Agit Kabayel
  5. Zhilei Zhang
  6. Efe Ajagba
  7. Jared Anderson
  8. Martin Bakole
  9. Frank Sanchez
  10. Joe Joyce
  11. Bakhodir Jalolov
  12. Fabio Wardley

It is worth noting that although Anthony Joshua is the top contender to fight Oleksandr Usyk for the WBC world championship belt, Tyson Fury will be the first to challenge him. Thanks to a rematch clause, another incredible fight between the Gypsy King and the undisputed champion is set for December 21 in Saudi Arabia.
