Today marks the UEFA Champions League final. At the legendary Wembley Stadium in London, UK, the most decorated club in this tournament's history, Real Madrid, will face off against Borussia Dortmund, who have won the title only once. This will be the 69th edition of Europe's most prestigious club competition and the 32nd since the rebranding from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League.
It is noteworthy that this will be the last Champions League in its current format. Starting next season, the tournament will feature 36 teams instead of 32, and the group stage will undergo a significant change.
Real Madrid is one of six clubs to have permanently retained the Champions League trophy and, alongside Bayern Munich, boasts two such prizes. For Los Blancos, this will be their 18th appearance in the final of Europe’s premier club competition, an absolute record. The last time Real Madrid claimed the trophy was in 2022. Remarkably, they have lost the final only three times, the most recent being in 1981.
Borussia Dortmund will be playing in their second final. They first triumphed over Juventus in 1997 and then faced Bayern Munich in the 2013 final, also held at Wembley.
Players from both teams still have a mathematical chance to contend for the top scorer title this season, though it seems unlikely. Currently, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe lead the chart with eight goals each. Among the finalists, three Real Madrid players—Joselu, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo—are the closest contenders with five goals each. From the German club, Niclas Füllkrug has the most goals, with three to his name.
It is also worth mentioning that the finalists already know their opponent in the battle for another title. The winner of today’s match will face Atalanta, the Europa League champions, on August 14 at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw.
