The referee of the Euro final will be the youngest in the final matches of the tournament
Tomorrow, the Euro 2024 final will take place, featuring the national teams of Spain and England. Earlier, we reported that UEFA announced the officiating team for the tournament's final match. The main referee will be Frenchman François Letexier.
Notably, Letexier will become the youngest referee in the history of Euro finals. At the time of the match, he will be 35 years and 82 days old. The previous record was held by Swedish referee Anders Frisk, who officiated the Euro 2000 final at the age of 37 years and 136 days.
Letexier will also be the youngest referee not only in Euro final history but also in World Cup finals history. However, it's worth noting that Swedish referee Ivan Eklind officiated the 1934 World Cup final at the age of 29, in addition to his duties in hockey matches.
Letexier expressed that officiating the Euro final is a great honor for him. His words were quoted by UEFA's website: "Of course, it's a great honor and a great satisfaction to be appointed to this match. It was a surprise because I just tried to stay focused day by day throughout the tournament and did not expect something so significant."
The Frenchman has officiated two group stage matches at Euro 2024 and one Round of 16 match. Previously, he refereed the 2023 UEFA Super Cup match and served as the fourth official for the Champions League final in June.
