The Luis Enrique factor! PSG makes Champions League history
PSG emerged as the 2025/26 Champions League winners, defeating Arsenal in a dramatic final that was decided by a penalty shootout. The regulation and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw, but in the post-match penalty series, the Parisian players held their nerve and triumphed 4-3.
Under Luis Enrique, PSG once again proved their reputation as true penalty shootout specialists. Since the Spanish manager’s arrival, PSG have won all six shootouts they've participated in.
The victory over Arsenal not only allowed the French giants to retain Europe’s most coveted club trophy, but also propelled them into an elite group of teams to have won the Champions League in back-to-back seasons. Prior to PSG, only nine clubs in the tournament’s history had achieved this feat: Real Madrid, Benfica, Inter, Ajax, Bayern, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, and Milan.

It’s worth noting that the last team to successfully defend their Champions League crown before PSG was Real Madrid, who lifted the trophy three times in a row from 2016 to 2018.
