On Friday, August 9, the women's 400 meters final took place, and it was marked by a new record.

Dominican athlete Marileidy Paulino completed the distance in 48.17 seconds, winning the gold medal at the Paris Games. Moreover, she set a new Olympic record. This is Paulino's third Olympic medal in her career; she previously won two silvers at the Tokyo Olympics.

Salwa Eid Naser from Bahrain secured second place with a time of 48.53 seconds, while Natalia Kaczmarek from Poland rounded out the top three.

As a reminder, the men's 4x100 relay final also took place at the Olympics, where the USA suffered a surprising defeat.

Incidentally, this relay saw a second shock: just a day earlier, the Jamaican team failed to advance to the final.
