Sven-Göran Eriksson has passed away at the age of 76
The renowned Swedish coach Sven-Göran Eriksson has passed away at the age of 76, reports the BBC.
Sven-Göran Eriksson began his coaching career at the age of 28. His first club was Swedish Degerfors, representing the third tier of Swedish football. Within three years, he led the team to the top tier of Swedish football.
He was then recruited by Gothenburg, with whom Eriksson won the Swedish championship twice, as well as two Swedish Cups and the UEFA Cup. From 1982 to 1984, Eriksson managed in Portugal, where he won two national titles and a Cup with Benfica.
Over his career, Eriksson managed 12 clubs and also coached the England national team, becoming the first non-British manager in its history. He led England from 2001 to 2006. Eriksson achieved notable success with Lazio, winning the club’s second-ever Scudetto and two Italian Cups.
He also had successful stints with Roma, Benfica, and Sampdoria. His last role was as head coach of the Philippines national team.
Eriksson won a total of 18 trophies throughout his coaching career.
In January 2024, he announced that he was suffering from an incurable form of cancer. He had previously expressed a desire to become Liverpool's head coach upon learning of his terminal illness.
This opportunity was granted to the 76-year-old coach as part of a charity event.
"It was an enormous memory in my life—absolutely wonderful. I cried, it was beautiful. Sitting on the Liverpool bench was a lifelong dream, and now it has come true. It was a perfect day in every sense. Thank you, Liverpool, for giving me this chance," Sven-Göran Eriksson said after the match.
The renowned Swedish coach won his only match as Liverpool's manager with a 4-2 victory.
