Spanish prime minister apologizes to Egypt national team over racist chants
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has issued an official statement strongly condemning the Islamophobic chants by fans during the friendly match against Egypt (0-0) in Barcelona.
Details: The head of government called the incident unacceptable and expressed full solidarity with the Egyptian players and supporters.
“We cannot allow an ill-mannered minority to tarnish the image of Spain—an open and tolerant country,” Sánchez wrote on his social media, stressing that such displays of hatred have no place in modern sport.
The scandal erupted on March 31 at the Cornella-El Prat stadium, when a group of radical fans began chanting xenophobic slogans directed at the guests' Muslim faith.
Reminder: Didier Drogba commented on the situation with Lamine Yamal after the racist scandal during the Spain vs Egypt match.
