The Royal Spanish Football Federation may alter the format of the Copa del Rey starting next season.

Details: According to Sport, the changes would impact the top clubs participating in the Spanish Super Cup. Four teams — Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao — would be separated into different pots during the draws for the round of 32 and the round of 16. This means they would not be able to face each other before the quarterfinals.

Incidentally, Athletic Bilbao’s management was in Madrid, awaiting a meeting with representatives of the Spanish Football Federation regarding possible financial irregularities involving Barcelona.

Reminder: The current Copa del Rey holders are Barcelona, who defeated Real Madrid 3-2 in the final.

Barcelona claimed their 32nd Spanish Cup, setting a new tournament record for most trophies won.
