The race at the legendary Japanese circuit was interrupted by a major incident on lap 22.
Details: Young Haas driver Oliver Bearman lost control and slammed into the safety barriers at high speed. The crash looked frightening: the car sustained heavy damage, and the safety car was immediately deployed.
Footage from the scene shows the impact was to the rear of the car, which came to a halt in the run-off area, wedged against advertising boards. The 20-year-old Briton managed to climb out of the cockpit on his own, though Oliver looked visibly shaken.
However, it appears he is okay.
